Dublin

Day 3 - Dublin, and my birthday. Dublin, meaning "town of the hurdled ford", is the capital and most populous city of Ireland. The English name for the city is derived from the Irish name Dubhlinn, meaning "black pool". Dublin is situated near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and the centre of the Dublin Region.
Originally found as a Viking settlement, it evolved in the the Kingdom of Dublin and became the island's principal city following the Norman invasion.
I took two bus tours this day that over lapped each other more than I would like, but the afternoon one included the tasting at Guinness whereas the morning tour included a river boat tour.

  • Some anti-Semitic graffiti in the newly developing financial district surprised our bus driver. It was gone by the time we came back four hours later.
  • The bridges over the River Liffey are all named after authors - the newest shaped like a harp is the Samuel Beckett Bridge.
  • The beginning of O'Connell Street - a main thorough fare.
  • I believe this is part of Trinity College, Ireland's oldest university, founded by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592 so the Irish could be educated "at home".
  • Dublin is famous for its Georgian architecture - the houses which used to be single family dwellings have many different uses now - many of these were tied to schools. The buildings are identical, so door and window treatments differentiate them.
  • This one appears to be used as an office building.

  • The Georgian houses did not have backyards so they would share a private garden block (referred to as Georgian Squares) that was locked and that their houses fronted on. I think there is a statue of Oscar Wilde in this one.

  • Don't know what street this is, but we went around this block at least six times during the course of the two bus tours...there are "bus only" streets which makes life easier and more difficult, I am sure!
  • Christ Church Cathedral (founded c.1028) is the spiritual heart of the city.
  • St Patrick's is one of two Anglican cathedrals in Dublin. It is built on the site where St Patrick is said to have baptized converts to Christianity. St Patrick's Cathedral, in its present state, was constructed in 1192, replacing an original wooden chapel. The main attractions in St Patrick's are the tombs of Jonathan Swift and his lover in the nave. The cathedral also contains the longest medieval nave in Ireland, and a stone slab, engraved with a Celtic cross, that covers the well from which St Patrick baptized the converts. The adjoining garden is a welcome oasis in this densely built-up district of the city.
  • St Patrick's Cathedral. Founded in 1191, it is the largest church in Ireland.
  • A friendly Irish man givers us the thumbs up as we are stopped. There were 3 or 4 men enjoying their morning coffee which might have been laced with some Irish Whiskey!
  • The Phoenix Park is 2–4 km west of the city centre, north of the River Liffey. Its 16 km perimeter wall encloses 707 hectares (1,750 acres) one of the largest walled city parks in Europe.[33][34] It includes large areas of grassland and tree-lined avenues, and since the 17th century has been home to a herd of wild Fallow deer. The residence of the President of Ireland (Áras an Uachtaráin), which was built in 1751,[35] is located in the park.
  • The Pope served Mass on this site. 3/4 of Dublin came. Interestingly, there is no Catholic Cathedral in Dublin...long story.
