Portree and the Isle of Skye

Day 6 - Portree, the largest town on the renowned Isle of Skye in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, has a picture-perfect harbor, fringed by cliffs, with a pier designed by noted Scottish civil engineer and architect Thomas Telford.
Our bus tour this day took us to the Trotternish Peninsula, past Staffin, a small crafting town overlooking sandy Staffin Bay, and continued around the northern tip of Skye. We continued on to the settlement of Kilmuir and visited the charming little Museum of Island Life to learn more the traditional crofting lifestyle. The tour concluded with a drive through Uig,

 • Although referred to by the locals as "the village", PORTREE is Skye's only real town, and is one of the most attractive fishing ports in northwest Scotland, its deep, cliff-edged harbour filled with fishing boats and circled by multi-coloured restaurants and guesthouses.

 • Old Man of Storr - we weren't sure the sun would come out, but it did - just in time.

 • Kilt Rock, a dramatic 200 foot-high cliff marked in an almost tartan-like pattern by rock strata, and a waterfall cascading down to the pebbled shore below.

 • Some of our fellow passengers - I loved how they dressed for the occasion!
 • The winter had been hard and late, and the spring flowers (Bluebells here) were just coming out.
 • I am actually quite pleased that I was able to capture these houses from the bus window.
 • You can see the window glare in this one.
 • One of my favorites - this is hanging in house!
 • Another beautiful day - typical countryside scene - the heather is still brown or this would be a glorious picture!

 • In the distance is Staffin Island[4][3] (possibly also known as Stenscholl Island[1]) is an islet off the east coast of the Trotternish peninsula of Skye in Scotland.
The Norse name may have been Fladdaidh[1] meaning "flat island". The Gaelic name Eilean Stafainn has the same meaning as the modern English name which is taken from the nearby settlement of Staffin.[5] "Stenscholl" is an area of Staffin.[3]
In 2011 it was reported that the island may be the last in Scotland where the old tradition of having cattle swim between grazings is still carried out. Crofter Iain MacDonald, who used to swim with the animals, now uses a boat to encourage them to swim from Staffin Island to Skye in early spring and back again in October.[6]
