London

We began our cruise with an overnight at the Landmark Hotel, a recently remodeled Victorian era hotel next to the Marlybone Station. It was a lovely hotel, but the food prices were ridiculous so I took a walk to find a grocery. There was a Tesco (parent of Fresh and Easy) and I as able to buy dinner including beers for less than the price of one appetizer at the hotel! We tried to take a walk, but Mom was too tired after the long airplane trip.
We had breakfast at the hotel (it was included) and then disaster struck. I took Mom out the back/front door of the hotel so she could see the train station (where we could have eaten cheaply) and she fell smack on her face having trip on a raised piece of side walk. We spent the morning at St. Mary's Hospital where she was checked out. Luckily there were no broken bones, but she was a mess for all of the cruise. We missed the buses to the ship, so the cruise line provided a private care from London to Southampton and we arrived just shortly before the ship set sail.

Waiting in Atlanta

  • Waiting in Atlanta
  • The Landmark Hotel back entrance where we came in.
  • Hotel's very famous "Winter Garden"
  • Ooe of several lovely lobbies.
  • Fresh flowers. The hotel was very upscale when first built, then turned into military hospitals during the first two wars, and into a government office building. It stood vacant and then was purchased and remodeled about 10 years ago.
  • In our room checking out a map of the neighborhood - we were very close to Regent Park and "Sherlock Holmes's digs".
  • I'm not sure if this was her house, or just named for her...but this area was the home of many medical "firsts".
  • Took a very short walk.
  • Yea - Tesco - bought a take out dinner

  • Sister/mother of our local Fresh and Easy
  • Turns out we could have had a cheap dinner at the train station which was out the front entrance of the hotel! Might have saved Mom from falling down the next morning.
  • Front entrance of the hotel.

  • Beautifully remodeled Marylebone train station.
  • Inside station which could have taken us to so many interesting places! Should have done my homework.
  • shops inside train station
  • Hotel ballroom set up for breakfast
  • This was a very English breakfast with undercooked bacon and runny scrambled eggs - I took the continental meat and cheese option!
  • The hotel set up a nice breakfast spread for us cruise goers.
